Modeling Reservoirs with CE-QUAL-W2

CE‐QUAL‐W2 (W2) is a two‐dimensional, longitudinal/vertical, hydrodynamic and water quality (WQ) model. Since the model assumes lateral homogeneity, it is best suited for relatively long and narrow waterbodies exhibiting longitudinal and vertical water quality gradients (USACE, 2017). The model has been applied to rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and combinations thereof.

WARMF is designed so that model output from catchments and river segments can be used as input for the CE-QUAL-W2 model. CE-QUAL-W2 files can be generated by specifying the names for output files in the appropriate catchment and river parameter tabs. The user can override the standard WARMF reservoir simulation by clicking on the radio button next to CE-QUAL-W2 at the bottom of the reservoir input dialog, as show below.

When the radio button corresponding to CE-QUAL-W2 is selected, the tabs of the reservoir coefficients dialog change to allow for entry of the data required to run the CE-QUAL-W2 model.

The most recent version of the CE-QUAL-W2 model is maintained and distributed by Portland State University. The model and supporting documentation can be downloaded from: http://www.ce.pdx.edu/w2/
