File Menu : Import : Land Use

Keyboard short-cut: Alt, F, I, U.

This function imports land use from ESRI shapefile format. Before invoking this function, edit the land uses to set the number and names of land uses the watershed will use after importing. When this function is activated, the dialog box will appear prompting the user to input a shapefile (.SHP) name. The shapefile must use decimal degrees for its coordinate system for the importing routine to function properly. Upon pressing OK, the shapefile’s corresponding .DBF file will be read and the codes extracted. The following dialog box will appear:

warmf00000124

Choose the field which represents the land use code for each polygon in the shapefile. Press OK, and another dialog box will appear:

warmf00000125

The WARMF land uses are listed on the right. The land use codes found in the shapefile are shown in the row headers of the spreadsheet. Within the spreadsheet, enter the number of the WARMF land use on the right corresponding to each of the shapefile land use codes. In the example above, the shapefile land use code 21 is linked to the WARMF Cropland/Pasture landuse, code 22 is linked to Orchard/Nursery, and code 23 is linked to Confined Feeding.

Many of the shapefile land use codes may be assigned to a single WARMF land use. If a land use code is assigned to “0”, it will be ignored and other land uses will be scaled upward as necessary to compensate. When OK is pressed, the polygons in the shapefile will be overlayed with the catchments in the watershed. Depending on the size of the shapefile and watershed, it may take from a few seconds to longer than an hour to complete.
