Edit Menu : Import HEC-DSS

This function accessed from within the Data Module is used to replace and/or expand existing data files using data extracted from files in the binary Data Storage System format developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center.

Upon activation of this function, an external utility called DSSUTL will catalog the DSS file and create a list of its contents. The utility will open a Command Prompt style window with C:\WINDOWS\system\cmd.exe in its header. To proceed, WARMF needs for the catalog to be complete. A dialog box is activated within WARMF asking the user to click OK when the external process is complete. The figure below shows the screen while the utility is running. The external process is complete when the black cmd.exe window disappears, which may take only a few seconds. Then press OK in the WARMF dialog box to see the DSS file catalog presented within WARMF.

The figure below shows a catalog listing of the DSS file in the WARMF Data Module. The first 6 columns of the spreadsheet represent the six headers (Part A through Part F) of the DSS file. The last three columns are used to select the data type, data file, and data column for the WARMF data corresponding to the DSS headers. The bottom of the dialog has a space to enter a file name suffix. If this is left blank, the original data in the data files will be replaced by the DSS data. If a suffix is selected, the original data files will be copied to files with the same name except with the suffix before the file extension. The modified files will then be modified, preserving the original data files. The active scenario will also be modified to refer to the modified files instead of the originals.

After pressing OK on the dialog showing the DSS catalog within WARMF, the DSSUTL utility is called again to extract data from the DSS files to temporary files. The external utility operates in a black Command Prompt style window as before. The utility must be allowed to complete, which may take several minutes. When it has completed and the black Command Prompt style window disappears, click OK on the WARMF dialog. This will complete the importing process by modifying the WARMF data files.
